Make your own eclipse projector
An eclipse is one of those times when it’s pretty fun to be an eye care professional. For one thing, you know not to look directly at the sun without protecting your eyes with eclipse viewers. (See Daniel Brunson’s great post about that, How to View the 2017 Solar Eclipse Safely.) And for another thing, you likely have a pair of trial lenses around, which means you can build your own eclipse projector.
On the ZEISS Eclipse 2017 website, optics expert Dr. Mike Morris shared his design for a simple Galilean telescope that projects an image of the sun onto a surface for easy viewing. The result looks something like this:
