Balance is Good

Balance is defined as a state in which different things occur in equal or proper amounts or have an equal or proper amount not of importance.

This past month I have seen a few prescriptions with balance lens noted. After getting acquainted, I like to ask how much vision the patient has out of the eye labeled balance. Some have peripheral vision with no center clarity and the others have nothing. In all these cases, regardless of prescription I would recommend the lenses be made out of an impact material, such as polycarbonate or Trivex material.

My personal preference is to match the balance lens sphere power to the new prescription sphere power when balance lens is noted. And that isn't a 100% guarantee, I have had folks prefer to match the prescription in their current glasses. It's a must verify the prescription and check with the patient's provider. Communication builds relationships and creates a better experience for the patient. We are all in it together.
