This past week a patient asked me to find lenses that protect from not only UVA and B but also UVC . I am more familiar with the damage we can experience from UVA and B and did a bit of investigating.
First I did a review. UVA is reported to penetrate the skin more deeply than UVB and has a major part in skin aging and damages where most skin cancers. UVB is the chief cause of reddening and sunburn damage however it also gives us Vitamin D.
After checking with our lab, various websites such as the American Optometric Association and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) I found they all concurred that UVC is absorbed by the ozone layer and does not present any threat presently.
I did discover that there is man-made UVC radiation technology designed to kill bacteria and is used sometimes in Hospital air filtration systems.
I am sure with the changing Ozone this is a situation will follow suite and will be reevaluated on the future.
