People Always Surprise Me

People Always Surprise Me

In my 33 years as a dispensing optician, here’s a story for the books:

A young man I had never worked with before came into our store and asked if I could put some new nose pads on his frame. I agreed and as he handed over his frame, I noticed not only were the nose pads missing, but his lenses were almost opaque. I told him the pads were easy to replace, but what happened to the lenses? Apparently, he was painting and got a few splatters on his lenses, so he tried to clean it off with lacquer thinner. This caused the lenses to fog up and his next step was to apply Meguiar’s automotive head light restorer. Needless to say, his lenses were toast! I had a conversation with him about how his vision was compromised by the finish quality of his lenses and safety was definitely a concern (his safety and that of others - he’s driving around with these things!). He thanked me for the nose pads and went on his way…
