INTERVIEW: Colin Balls

How was your company founded?

The Ethical brand Colin Leslie Bamboo Eyewear was founded in 2009.

Colin Leslie being an lifetime ethical advocate also having worked in the building industry as a carpenter joiner for over 30 years. Felt that there was something missing in styles of eyewear for the modern way of life.
Having worn glasses from a young age Colin wanted to combined something that he loved the wooden element with a mix of modern ethical recycled and sustainable materials with something that everybody loved being on trend sunglasses and fashion frames.

What separates you from the competition?

Incorporating current trends with simple, yet distinctive features, the Colin Leslie UK brand produces fashion frames and sunglasses, that have become synonymous with simplicity, sustainability and bold, innovative street styles.This affordable, bamboo ethical eyewear range, uniquely fuses vintage, classic, retro designs with bamboo temple arms and recycled acetate frames.

What is one little-known fact about your company?

Colin Leslie is a member of the Ethical Fashion Fellowship 500 and lifetime ethical advocate since 2009.

In 2013 a highlight for the label was being selected as an official BRIT Gift Bag partner.

Colin Leslie was nominated as a finalist for the Ethical fashion Source awards 2013.

In 2014, Colin Leslie graced the catwalk in partnership with.designer Miss Magou at London Fashion Week. Colin Leslie also honoured to be an official gifting partner with Fashion Scout at London Fashion Week SS15, featuring in five shows and affirming its status as one of the UK’s most exciting eyewear brands.

As proud sponsor of Fashion Scout, Colin Leslie was part of five major events at London Fashion Week 2014. These events included Ones to Watch, Merit Awards, Swedish School of Textiles Fashion Show, Mercedes Benz Kiev Fashion Days and the intended FAD closing show. In 2015, Colin Leslie also took part in London Fashion Week once again and recently exhibited at the International Spring Fair 2015 at the NEC.

What inspires you at work?

The Colin Leslie Ethos is to make people aware of ethical fashion. Showing that by buying just one ethical product, you are helping to preserve the planet.

What's one thing you'd like to share with opticians?

The Colin Leslie ranges has become a firm favourite with both public and celebrities alike. Worn by celebrities including Emeli Sande, Olly Murs Tinchy Stryder, Calum Best and Ollie Proudlock to name but a few.
Crafted from sourced bamboo plantations, the pieces are ethically produced, with elements made from recycled acetate and plastic products. Colin Leslie is now stocked by dozens of ethical fashion boutiques across the globe, in independent opticians and online. We have a strong loyal social media following near to 20K on twitter.
