Self-Consciousness is The Enemy of All Art
Holy smokes, welcome to 2016! I'd like to take this opportunity on my first blog of the new year to say that it's been a WHOLE year since I joined Daily Optician (this is my FIFTEENTH post!).
Admittedly, I am someone who suffers from social anxiety so when I first became an Optician I struggled with being comfortable with face-to-face interactions. Gaining confidence in the trade and working with an array of customers/patients from infancy to 99 years old (I don't think I have fit anyone over 100 at this point) has given me the chance to interact with people from all walks of life and has made me feel less nervous about just walking up to someone and sparking a conversation. I mean, doesn't everyone need a pair of glasses in some form--even if they're only sunglasses?
I love being involved in this trade and I'm so grateful to DailyOptician for opening the door to connect with humans from across the country and around the world. This community allows me to freely express myself and connect opticianry with other things I enjoy (crafting, drawing, writing... art stuff, etc.). The DO forum has been an amazing resource for me to connect with other like-minded individuals who all share the same passion. Being able to submit a monthly post from my point of view with my spin on things has really pushed me to step up my game and explore every nook and cranny of being an Optician. I am consistently drawing inspiration from other bloggers/companies on DO and have been given opportunities I never expected.
As for my social anxiety, I'm not sure that will ever go away but being a part of this community has helped me to become someone with a purpose (not that I didn't have an actual purpose before, but more like a definite direction). For the first time in my career I feel like I have the opportunity to be exactly who I am and utilize my best skill sets. The confidence I've built has made me a stronger individual and I thank Daily Optician for helping me along in my journey.
Shout out to good ol' Ray Bradbury (who wrote Fahrenheit 451) for my blog title... the full quote: "Self-consciousness is the enemy of all art, be it acting, writing, painting, or living itself, which is the greatest art of all."
