Teamwork [Alexander Bennett]
Teamwork is defined as the combined action of a group of people, especially when effective and efficient. With four opticians in the office, the work we do is truly a team effort. Each of us dispense, repair, adjust and troubleshoot problems for patients that each of us have met at some point. So we need to be on the same page about verbiage, office policies, and how we handle each individual case so that each interaction is relatively uniform.
Any time that a patient has a problem with their glasses, it is discussed as a group, no matter how trivial the problem may seem. We capitalize on this opportunity to brainstorm and reach solutions. Our four opticians have a combined 47 years of experience in the industry, but we all bring different product knowledge to the table. We have such diverse backgrounds working with labs, reps, frame brands, lens manufacturers and products, and with such a varied marketplace, it only helps our team get stronger and grow by working together.
John Donne wrote “No man is an island,” and no single optician has all of the answers. A captain helps lead a team to achieve their goals, but a team only grows stronger when everyone is included and represented. By working together, we strengthen our bonds and camaraderie as a group. Like any well-tuned machine, it needs care and maintenance. Review your policies, discuss and educate your team, and sharpen your skills. Your optical will run more smoothly, your team will become closer, and your patients will be happier. Everybody wins.
