So, why Optical? [Charlie Blankenship]
What led me to optical was the fame and fortune of course! Oh wait, that was my dream of being a band manager/concert promoter. To be perfectly honest, I never had any plans about becoming an optician. None of my dreams or ideas for what I wanted to do for a living were even remotely close to what I do now. How I got my start in optical was nothing more than pure chance.
I was 19 and had recently moved back to the Twin Cities. My girlfriend at the time and I were both in need of a job, so we went out to the Mall of America - applying everywhere that would take an application. About halfway through the day we both were tired of filling out the same information over and over, so we decided to make our way to the car but agreed (reluctantly on my part) to stop at places with a “Now Hiring” sign. We had almost made it out of the mall when out of the corner of my eye I saw it in the window of an optical chain. I didn’t point it out, hoping she wouldn’t see it, and we almost made it past... Almost. Three weeks later I had a job working as a lab technician.
Looking back, there are so many little things that could have happened differently that would have drastically changed where I am standing today. There are things I wish I would have done differently, heartaches I wish I never had, but when all is said and done each and every one of those things had a part in leading me to where I am today and for that I am grateful. As for the fame and fortune? Well, this is as close as I’ve got!
