Since becoming a preferred Google Glass Eye care provider, our practice was invited to attend the VIP Google Glass Reception in Seattle. Glass is on a nationwide tour in select cities allowing ECP's, press and the public to test out the technology, and more importantly, check out the quality of the opthalmic frames - which was the primary reason for me to attend the event. The frames are made by Google, which will soon change. Every frame is 55-19 and is very thin stamped flex titanium material. I was honestly suprised by the versatility of the frame designs as I could wear almost any of the only four styles. They may be a bit wide for some people, but the added technology almost makes it okay. I am, however, not impressed by the lack of adjustment options. No panto, no temple wrapping, the only adjustment possible is at the bridge... and the temples do not close requiring a massive case. Again I was impressed by how well it sat on my face, I was expecting weight balance to be a problem, but it gently wrapped my head and stayed put. As you've probably seen, VSP is marketing that they will allow their frame benefit to be applied towards the $225 frames, but with the patient having to buy directly from Google, not through the office, the patient must have to self bill for reimbursement (I did not get a clear answer from Google or VSP). Another bullet point in this mission was to find out if ECP's could purchase the frames at wholesale prices for patients to try on in our clinic... No. The frames are available at the retail cost only and we have to wait until Luxottica starts manufacturing the frames to buy at wholesale. As for the technology, it was interesting to experience. I found the display location, which was comparible to a rear view mirror location while driving, quickly caused eye strain and would take some serious time to get used to. Glass itself was pretty self explanatory and easy to learn how to use.
